The idea for an awareness walk in Fort Myers came about when Stacey Brill, a Speech Pathologist who helps Head & Neck cancer patients re-learn how to swallow after they have had treatment, noticed that many of her patients were unable to afford the co-pays and had difficulty paying for other costs associated with the cancer treatments. She decided to start Head & Neck Cancer, A Hard Thing to Swallow to help these patients. Stacey is also a believer in preventing Head & Neck Cancer or at least catching it early via screening examinations. She therefore started an annual screening event, free to the public, for this purpose.
