Age groups? Awards given?
Yes, awards will be given in the typical 5 year age groups, 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24….
Concerned Runner: I’ve been running races in SWFL for almost 25 years. My current age group is 74-79. You’ve advised that there will be awards in upcoming races, such as this race in Cape Coral, for the animal shelter, however, I’ve noticed that in recent past races with Ft. Myers Track Club, and 3D running club, my age group has been eliminated. Instead of competing fairly against other runners 74-79 years of age, I am to compete with runners 70 years and older. This is simply unfair. My last race was run with Ft. Myers Track on 2/6/2021. My age group (74-79) was eliminated. I placed 6th in the 70+, but would have gotten 2nd had they kept my 74-79 age group. The race before that was with you, 3D Running Club, back in January. The 74-79 age group was eliminated again. I got 5th place in the 70+, but I would have gotten 1st had they kept my 74-79 age group. With many runners these days competing well into their 80’s, I feel there should be fair age brackets for us. A 74-79, and an 80+ would be fair to all ages. I feel quit discouraged as an older runner, competing against runners much younger than I. Thank you for your consideration.
As a runner who hopes to still be running when I reach your age, I agree. It is great to see and cheer the competitors in those groups receiving their awards and it must be special for them to feel the support of others. I am sure your friends and relatives support and cheer you on, but when fellow runners and spectators who have no idea who you are, other than a person who enjoys to run, show admiration for your accomplishment it is huge. Not just for older runners but even the youngest. The more the merrier.
